What the sources establish—and what they do not.

Established

The Hermes Agent repository is MIT-licensed and describes it as "The agent that grows with you." It installs on Linux, macOS and WSL2 with a shell script, on native Windows with PowerShell and on Android through Termux; the docs add a desktop installer for Windows and macOS.
The README says it can run on "a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure" with local, Docker, SSH, Modal, Daytona and Vercel Sandbox terminal backends, and it works with Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI or custom model endpoints.
One gateway process connects the agent to chat platforms; the README lists Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal and email, and the docs describe 20+ platforms. Memory is agent-curated, skills follow the agentskills.io standard, and a built-in cron scheduler delivers results to any platform.
The security docs set command approvals to smart by default: an auxiliary model approves low-risk commands, denies dangerous ones and asks you when uncertain; manual and off modes exist. Container backends skip dangerous-command checks because the container is the boundary, and unattended and cron runs deny by default. Unknown chat users are denied until you approve a pairing code.
Nous Portal is an optional subscription that bundles 300+ models and managed tools for web search, image generation, text-to-speech, a cloud browser and an optional cloud sandbox. Existing providers and your own keys stay usable alongside it.

Needs verification

Nous Portal prices were not shown on the pages reviewed, and Hermes Agent's running cost depends on the model, tools and host you choose, so no like-for-like monthly cost is computed.
The command approval system covers terminal commands. Whether a post, email or ad created through an added tool or skill asks for confirmation depends on that tool and was not established.

Is Hermes Agent free?

The software is free and open source under the MIT license. Running it is not free: you pay the model provider for usage, plus any server or sandbox you host it on, and optionally a Nous Portal subscription for bundled models and tools.

Can Hermes Agent do marketing for a startup?

It can if you give it the tools. Hermes is a general agent: posting to social networks, sending email campaigns or running ads depends on the MCP servers, skills and keys you add and how you set their permissions. Many guides suggest starting with draft-only or read-only work and keeping public actions under review.

Is Soloop a Hermes Agent alternative?
